All India Institute of Medical Science Delhi

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, also known as AIIMS, is located in India’s capital, New Delhi.

Created in 1956 from a dream of Jawaharlal Nehru, the hospital community’s motto is, “The body is a medium to do dharma” which is following the teachings of Buddhism and Hinduism.

The hospital receives funding from India’s Union Government. It has been considered the top medical school and hospital in India for eleven years as voted in a survey taken by India Today.

The AIIMS is well known to provide quality healthcare services to patients from all economic backgrounds. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences is located in the medical district of South Delhi.

AIIMS has been noted as one of India’s Institutes of National Importance. The reason for its success includes several facets such as small classrooms, outstanding libraries, a liberal approach to teaching, a strong research background, and the liberty of designing its own unique curriculum.

AIIMS has been named the top hospital in India by The Week and Outlook magazines as it excels in fields such as Ophthalmology, Gynecology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, and Cardiology. The hospital practices tertiary care which means that there are primary hospital which refer their clients to their in-network secondary hospitals and then on to their tertiary clinics as necessary. There are approximately forty-five sub-specialties within the hospital organization.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi offers seven specialty centres. They are: the Cardio-Thoracic Sciences Centre, the Centre for Dental Education and Research, the Neurosciences Centre, the Dr. R.P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, the Dr. B.R.A Institute-Rotary Cancer Hospital, the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre, and the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre.

The Cardio-Thoracic Sciences Centre opened its doors in 1982 and has 200 beds for cardiology and cardiovascular surgery patients. The Centre for Dental Education and Research recently opened in 2003.

The centre offers post-graduate classes in Orthodontics & Dent facial Orthopedics, Prosthodontics, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The Neurosciences Centre focuses on Neurology, Neuro-Surgery, Neuro-Anaesthesiology, Neuro-Biochemistry, Neuro-Pathology, Neuro-Psychology, and Neuro-Radiology.

The Dr. R.P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences was created in 1967 and provides research and care for ophthalmic related issues and diseases. The Dr. B.R.A Institute-Rotary Cancer Hospital is a 200 bed care facility which opened in 1983-84 to research and treat cancer and cancer related illnesses. The National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre was established in 1988 as a drug and addiction treatment facility offering both inpatient and outpatient care. The Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre’s goal is to provide sympathetic care to all patients that require its services.

Since its inception in 1956, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences has grown to include twenty-five clinical branches with four specialty centres. The hospital focuses its practice and studies on all types of diseases and refers its lesser cases to other hospitals. The goal of the AIIMS is to teach undergraduate and post-graduate medical students a curriculum that spans all of the hospital’s specialties.
