Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals started out as a dream that a husband and wife shared together on behalf of the people of India.

Because of the poor conditions and unclean facilities of the maternity homes the two doctors started their facility around the lines of a decent, clean place for people to have their children delivered.

They found themselves working twenty four hours a day every day of the week. The wife Dr. S. A. Mehta was a true family doctor taking care of the children and their parents. With the large variety of medical problems they were treating they expanded and expanded again not only in the size of the hospital but they also went into other specialized medical fields.

They had a daughter who became a doctor, Dr. Usha Shukla and joined them at the hospital. She practiced both in the north and south sections of India at several well known hospitals. Leading doctors and specialists were invited to practice at Dr. Mehta’s Hospital in Chennai. The hospital has good testimonies from its patients and is recommended by other doctors.

They sometimes have to deal with the mother wanting to go home early and have to get through to her why this is not advisable. They address the situation of what can be done for babies that do not sleep well.

A community project was started at Mehta Children’s Hospital. The program involves training caretakers to screen children, fill out forms, care for equipment and send any children that need help to the Dr. Mehta’s Children’s Hospital for treatment that is free of cost. The caretakers will be trained on how to handle emergencies and a special team will transport the child by ambulance to the hospital.

The progress of the children will be monitored. Social workers will work with nutritionists to advise the caretakers. A twenty four hour emergency ambulance service is being developed for the children along with a team of rescue workers. An outpatient clinic will be started free of cost to be open weekdays and sample medications are wanted from any Pediatricians who will donate them.
